What is the IFREMT?

IFREMT stands for International Federation of Registered Equine Massage Therapists. Established in 1996, we are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the provision of safe, ethical, and qualified equine massage therapy services within the equine health care industry.

The IFREMT aims to achieve this goal by setting the qualification standards required to obtain the REMT designation (Registered Equine Massage Therapist) and by developing and maintaining standards of practice and professional ethics for our registered members.

Is equine massage therapy a regulated profession?

Unlike human massage therapy, equine massage therapy is not regulated in many provinces, states, and countries. Registered Equine Massage Therapists (REMTs) operate under the direction of the horse’s primary veterinarian. In the absence of specific regulations, the IFREMT works to uphold the same high standards of qualification for our members as those established by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, which governs Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) in Ontario. Only those therapists who earn the REMT designation have met the necessary requirements set forth by the IFREMT.

What is the difference between a “Registered” and “Certified” equine massage therapist?

The title “Registered Equine Massage Therapist” (or REMT) is legally protected by the IFREMT and can only be used by individuals who have successfully completed the accreditation process and met the qualification standards established by our organization.

Similar to the educational requirements for RMTs in Ontario, REMTs must complete a comprehensive course of study at a recognized institution. The IFREMT conducts board exams that comprise both a written and a practical component, which is overseen by a supervising veterinarian. Additionally, REMTs are required to successfully complete a 50-hour externship with a veterinarian.

“Certification” in equine massage may be offered by various schools, individuals, and organizations; however, these programs can differ significantly in content and length, ranging from a few days to several months. There is no governing body for Certified Equine Massage Therapists (CEMTs), and each school establishes its own qualification standards.

Will the information I give an REMT be kept confidential?

In accordance with the standards established by the IFREMT, Registered Equine Massage Therapists (REMTs) are mandated to keep all client information, both verbal and written, strictly confidential. Information collected about clients can only be obtained with consent and may only be shared with consent.

What is the best way to incorporate equine massage in the care of my horse?

Equine massage therapy can play an essential role in a horse’s ongoing equine health care and maintenance program. It is also beneficial in the rehabilitation process post-injury, though it should never replace or serve as an alternative to veterinary care.
